I have a 401k with TSP that i have approx. $20,000 wondering if i should move it to IRA and then to Roth IRA that i already have open and slowly convert. I am 52. also i just transferred money i have in my companies 401k to vanguard wellington mutual fund it was in their options. previously had in a time/year account but fees looked pretty high (1.07 fee) so i transferred all into vanguard fund (0.17). should i just have done future contributions? second guessing myself. thanks for your input.

If you are still working at the company with which you have your 401k (isn't a TSP government program that is more of annuity?) you can't move money from the 401k to an IRA. Why not change your 401k to a Roth-type?

thanks GrimJack. I was in the national guard the TSP is like a 401k. so i can close and transfer to traditional IRA. i am considering switching my options to Roth 401k at my company. you can only do this once a year.

Don't forget that the TSP is an annuity - it might be the cheapest annuity you can have; how much do you have in it and do you know what your monthly income from it would be? I have a TSP with a little over 6k and it reports that if I retire now, I would get $100 per month. I would really not touch the TSP (that does sound pretty odd, unfortunately, all my docs are packed but I know I have less than 12k in it).
