  • Needing Guidence with setting up my 401k

    Good day, im here for some help on setting up my 401k through work. Im new to this and am just starting to keep track of my investments. Im 25 and plan to follow the 120 formula, which means 5% in bonds and 95% in stocks if i have this correct. I will start with a 7% investment since my company will match 6% and increase as income does. Im needing your help in selecting from these following investments and am open to anything. Thanks!     You are 25. you have 40+ years until retirement. you should be very aggressive now while you are young and do not need to money any time soon. Put it all into NO BONDS! and stay away for target date funds like the Lifetime funds.

    I'll suggest the only get into 2 more then 3 funds. get a large cap , small cap, and international fund. when you get a good amount of money in the 401k then you could add more funds to diversify more.

    120 formula make sense when you are a lot older.

    just out of curiosity, which company is the plan provider??

      Thanks for the info, The Company is Alta Communications. Ive been reading through info sites and have come up with these investments. Im open to see what yall think.

      3% - PTRAX = PIMCO Total Return Fund
      3% - MCARX = MFS Conservative Allocation Fund

      40% - MLRTX = MainStay Large Cap Growth Fund
      14% - RNPCX = American Funds - New Perspective Fund
      10% - ATHAX = American Century Heritage Fund
      10% - NEIAX = Columbia Large Cap Index Fund
      10% - MIRTX = MFS Massachusetts Investors Trust
      10% - MVRRX = MFS Value Fund

        What you picked will be great if you account had $1,000,000 in it. As a said in my last post. No more then three. And here is the reason why; Each of those funds have 200 to 500 stocks in them. Sometimes thousands. being deversified is important, BUT OVER deversifing will hurt your returns. Why will be speading yourself to thin if you choose all those funds. do a 33% x 3 mix and you'll be fine.
