  • Best Online Bank Account (For Features, not Rate)

It's easy to find info about a banks interest rate but I don't want to open a half dozen bank accounts to find one I LIKE.

I'm curios what the better online banks are in regards to how easy it is to manage everything without ever needing to go to a physical location or call a physical person. I'm looking for easy to make deposits, free ATM withdrawls (from any ATM machines and also comes with ATM fee refunds), good options for free automatic or manual transfer to other outside accounts, etc. Interest rates are important but not the primary focus.

    Opinions / experiences?

I've had a "High Interest" Investor Checking account at Schwab and it's been ok. Their customer service (when I've needed it) has been good and they refund all ATM fees, but transferring funds to/from is not as good as it could be. You have to first movie funds to the brokerage account (which can be automated) and then move funds from there to outside accounts (which must be done manually). And the "High Interest" is only .25% I think.

I like ING for the simplicity and transparency of their site. Very easy to label and initiate new accounts and transfers. Also customer service is answered by real people when you call.

I've only had experience with ING savings accounts, but I like ING so far. I'm a relatively new customer with them (less than a year), but it's pretty easy to set up an account. Transfers are easy to do, and are free when you initiate them with ING. I know they're not THE leader as far as interest rates are concerned, but they've been consistently near the top. Right now, their savings is at 1.1%, which is far better than many brick-n-mortar type banks. I really can't comment on the ATM part of your question since I just have a savings account there.

The only thing that bothers me about ING is that when I transfer money into the account, it often shows up in my ING account before my other bank shows the withdrawal- so it looks like I have more than I really do.

I can recommend Ally Money Market account. They refund all ATM fees charged by other banks and offer free online transfers to/from outside accounts. They also give you free checks. The customer service is available 24/7, and when I called them with a question, they were were helpful. Their current rate is 1.09% APR.

I just switched all my bank accounts to Ally, their Savings and MM accounts offer very competitive rates with other top banks. Their website is INCREDIBLY clean and user friendly which is a big selling point to me. As Safari said, they credit all your ATM fees at the time of your monthly statement which is very nice, it's also a decently high interest earning checking account also.

The only downside with it like most other online banks, is that you can't physically go into one to deposit a check you receive. I just end up mailing them to the bank and have them deposit it for me, I only get checks anyways now from my birthday and holiday gifts. Everything else is direct deposit.

EDIT: Another thing I like is that they offer a Live Chat with a representative on their website. If your lazy like me, you don't even have to pick up your phone.

I haven't really looked into ING, but they might offer it too.
