  • online savings account

I am not currently a US resident, although I am a citizen. I would like to open an online savings account. I'm looking for high-yield, obviously, no monthly fees, an initial balance of $1,000 or less, as well as good customer service and the option of opening the account with a wire transfer. Which bank would you suggest?

I use HSBC Advance, which I also opened several years ago while living outside the US. Not the highest rate out there (1.10% at the moment), but it's generally in the top tier and I love that I can easily set up and execute bank to bank external transfers at no charge. I've never had a problem with their customer service, unlike previous experiences with what I consider the worst bank in the world- Bank of America.

I need to have the option of opening an account by wire transfer, and not linked to a brick and mortar account, assumedly in the US. Which ones would fulfill these requirements?

The ING orange account might meet your needs. I opened mine years ago and don't remember if the initial deposit was done by wire or check. I know all subsequent transactions have been done electronically.

If no one else has any other recommendations you might just have to look at the banks' websites one by one until you find one that meets your needs or you reach the end of the list.

I opened my HSBC account while living outside of the country by just initiating an electronic transfer from a non-HSBC account. You don't need an HSBC checking account or anything linked to a brick and mortar account. I'm sure you could mail a check or money order as well, but the e-transfer is much easier in my opinion.
