  • Mutual fund up 116.43% in 1 year!

I just checked the performance of one of our funds in order to respond on another thread. Our gold and special minerals fund (OPGSX) is up 116.43% for the year ended 11/6. I've been investing in mutual funds since 1992 and that is by far the best 1-year performance I've ever seen. The previous best was about 70% a number of years ago for HRTVX.

I only wish we had a larger position in this fund. It is in my wife's old 403b plan but she is no longer at that job and thus not contributing to that fund.

Just remember, the quicker they rise, the quicker they fall. Although it might continue solid gains, just be on the lookout for a rapid pullback/correction.

Do you have control of OPGSX? Could you sell that particular fund and buy another product when this gold price bubble breaks? If so start researching where to go next.

I need to check on that. It is in an inactive 403b. I had been thinking about rolling over that money into her IRA so that may be what I end up doing. It is a very small amount of money (unfortunately).

Congrats Steve, however if that fund had not been in a 403(b) there's probably no way you would be invested in it since it has a hefty 5.75% load.

The best fund I've ever had so far was T Rowe's Latin America fund (PRLAX) which is up 102.55% YTD I'm contemplating pulling the trigger on that one, but I want that exposure in my retirement account.

True. She didn't have to pay the load within the 403b account.

Oh Wow!! I wish mine would do that. I'm even in high risk and not seeing big spikes like that

This fund represents about 1% of our total investable assets, barely a blip on the allocation plan.

I love these returns! Gold is not a bad hold but I'd be loath to buy any at current rates.

Regardless of the amount/scenario that return is fantastic and definitely something to be excited about. It makes you want to work just a little bit harder to find that next best stock or mutual fund!
