  • Need checking with free ACH transfers

I have two checking accounts with Wamu/Chase. One is a joint account which DBF and I set up with the idea of direct debiting the mortgage and HOA fees. The second I've had for quite a while which I use to deposit checks and cash and then transfer to my online banks. In the mail recently I received a booklet describing changes to the deposit account terms as Wamu transitions to Chase. One major change is that ACH transfers will now cost $3/request. I've called and confirmed this with the telephone bankers. I will make an attempt to go into the local branch and get this waived, but I'm not optimistic.

So now I'm on the hunt for a new bank. My requirements for a checking account are that it must be free, no minimum balance requirement, no direct deposit requirement, and free ACH transfers. I'll look into local CUs (I'm in San Diego if anyone knows specifics), but was hoping you guys might have some ideas.

    Thanks.

Are they charging only for outbound ACH transfers, or inbound transfers too?

I have been extremely pleased with Charles Schwab's Investor Checking. There aren't any physical branches, so if you do a lot of cash deposits, this isn't for you. They reimburse you for all ATM fees, charge no FOREX fees, charge no fees for inbound ACH transfers (haven't tested outbound), and have excellent customer service.

I second Chuck. No fees and great customer service.

I do need to have local branches available to make deposits - sorry I wasn't clear on that point. I don't often deposit cash, but I'm not wild about sending endorsed checks through the mail to be deposited. I currently have a high yield checking account as my primary checking, but it is with a bank that has no branches anywhere near me. Unfortunately it does not offer ACH transfer services at this time, so I can't get around the fee by initiating transfers from that bank's website.

The Chase booklet just says that the fee will be $3/request, with no distinction made between incoming and outgoing ACH transfers, so I guess this means that any ACH transfer you initiate on the Chase/Wamu site would be subject to the fee.

It's OK to send endorsed checks through the mail. In the endorsement area, simply write "For Deposit Only" with your account number. Actually I have a stamp for it. I endorse the check and stamp it. If anyone intercepts the check, they can't cash it for cash.
