  • Maxed out 401k and Roth IRA. Now what?

I have a lot of extra cash flow and wondering what's a good investment after retirement. I don't own a house but rent a room for $300 because my job relocates me every year so investing in real estate is out of the picture. 50% of my take home pay goes to retirement. I actually have an extra $400 per month I can invest. Been researching at mutual funds that are tax friendly. Not sure which ones are the best. Thanks for any advice.

Most index funds are naturally tax friendly. Not to mention you'll typically save a lot of money on expenses too.

Are you saving cash outside retirement accounts so you'll be able to buy a house when your job changes? Alternately, you could figure out where you eventually want to live (near family, maybe) and buy a rental property there with the intention of moving into it when you are ready to settle down.

Yeah. I'm looking at some index funds at Vanguard especially the Total US Stock. I also have 6 months expenses saved so I'm set in the emergency fund. One option might be to go with the index fund and if I do decide to settle down, I can sell the index fund for a house/rental.

Check out PRPFX for a taxable account.
Possibly add a position in REITs (probably in IRAs for tax reasons) because you do not own a house. PRPFX owns some Real estate tax efficiently.
