    I don't think there is a single index that can be used to judge your entire portfolio.

      Vanguard Total Stock Market VIPERs (symbol VTI) tracks the performance of the Wilshire 5000 which has .15% expense ratio. If you want Mutual Fund, the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX). BTW, I owned VTI once.

        First, you need to know which mutual fund manager in your 401k has put together the best investment portfolio. Then you need a way to determine which of those funds will give you the best performance over the next 12 months. Strategic Asset Allocation is buy and hold or as I refer to it buy and lose, which is no longer the best way to Manage Your Own Money. Second, active management requires an Exit Strategy. That is why you lost so much money over the last year. My recommendation is to learn all you can about Tactical Asset Allocation. You will do a much better job of managing your 401k if you do.
