  • Salem Five Direct review

I didn't know where to post this stuff. Someone started a thread about this bank months ago with little success. Apparently, there has been some negative feedback about their customer service and their application process. I thought I'd share these posts with you guys/gals. BTW, I found these comments on the Piggy Banker website.

I just submitted my application to open a new account with Salem Five Direct on June 20, 2007. Then I received an email from the bank to request a copy of my SSN and a copy of my driver license on June 21. I then faxed them the required documents on June 22. Two hours later, I received an email from the bank telling me that my application has been declined. The reason is that they cannot verify my information! These guys are just ridiculous - all the information I have been submitted are true and I have a credit score of more 730(BTW, this bank will do a hard credit inquiry). So, this offer looks a scam!

DO NOT OPEN THE ACCOUNT WITH THEM!

Thanks for the information, Dogli. Anyone else have a bad experience with Salem Direct?

Here’s my follow up with the Salem Five Direct:

    1. I requested a copy of Equifax credit report which showed Salem Five Direct had pulled a hard inquiry on my credit report.
    2. I called the customer service asking why my account application was declined. The first customer services representative told me that was caused by their computer server error.
    3. I then called back and talked with a supervisor, and was told that I was declined because the address on my driver license did not match the address with my account application. I told them it was because I moved server al months ago and did’t get time to update my drive license address. Guess what she said? She said that I should get a new driver license first before I applied for their account. I then asked whether I could submitted other documents, such as utility bill, that had been listed in their email, and was told NO - because I had submitted document already and could not submitted other documents!!!

Obviously, they just don’t want to open account for me. I really don’t understand why - I have an excellent credit history and a credit score of more than 770! The only thing I can think is that my initial deposit was just $200, but I usually do not send initial check with a big amount since it can be lost. Also, I have planned to transfer 150K fund to the new account. I think this bank has discrimination on individuals. Does anyone know where to file a complain against it?

Also, I strongly recommend you to think it again before you submit a new applicaiton with this bank since they could put a new hard inquiry on your credit history and then decline you.

I had no problems signing up with these guys and I am looking forward to the 5.00% rate on my new checking account. Hope they don’t mess with the rate.

As to filing a complaint for not taking your deposit?! I personally think SalemFive is being way too cautious and it is their “loss” to not take your deposit. But they do need to be careful because of identity theft. If they mess up, their regulators will come down on them. The crooks are making it difficult for you, not SalemFive. Given that background, I think a complaint is a little harsh. Just my two cents.

same problem. i was denied the high interest e-checking at salem five. they couldn’t verify info, then stated my credit score (680) wasn’t high enough.

Has anyone on this forum had similar experiences with them?
There is more feedback on bankerdeals.blogspot if anyone wants to read more about them.

No offense to any other forum or blog but, once again, I see a lot of whining about pretty much nothing.

The only legit concerns here are that they do a hard pull and, apparently, require a very good credit score to open an account.

Of course if your driver license address doesn't match that's going to be a problem. That particular commenter is mad because HE didn't bother to update his drivers license prior to applying for a new online account. How ridiculous. At least the other guy who had an issue recognized that it was because his info didn't match. Instead of ranting on about it, he corrected it and reapplied.

I was also surprised about the hard credit pull. I never heard of needing good credit to open a checking account.

SalemFive does not deserve my (or your) business until they make drastic changes to their sign-up process and customer service. My story (background): I had Netbank for at least 10 years, then they went out of business and IngDirect took over my account. Because I do lots of intl travel, I needed low ATM fees and internet access

Anyway, I researched checking accounts for days, read the reviews and ultimately chose Salem Five e-banking for their rates and fees. Applying was a nightmare. I applied online, then received an email asking for a copy of my drivers license and SSN card. I sent .pdf copies of mine and my joint account holder. We both have excellent credit.

After this, we received an email stating that we were APPROVED Welcome! Then in big Red, bold letters on the bottom it stated I had 10 days to send a signed hardcopy and my initial deposit.

I complied even though it was xmas holidays and I was traveling too. This process started early December 2007, I just received notice that they are returning my deposit and withdrawing my application since I failed to provide the needed information. Their customer service during the process has been terrible and insulting regarding the tone of their emails.

Salem Five is not able to deliver and they dont deserve my (or your) business. I rate them as one star they did nothing but waste my time. bob

If you are looking for a new internet bank, this is not a good choice!

Your response is another of the myriad of negative posts that I've seen on the internet about this company. Too bad their brass isn't smart enough to figure out that they need to upgrade their services.

              well, lets not be negative

There is a banking culture of taking advantage of us, but there are other options, I like Capitol One cards for foreign travel, debit cards, I am still researching, but I don't think we should pay or excuse bad service. I live most of the time in Costa Rica and live debt free, I'm only 45, and off the radar for most, but I am still an American and worded and paid my bills. I can't believe we let the banks nickel and dime us, but then again, gw...

If your really interested, I will write more, bob

Yes, apparently the general sentiment about Salem Five is holding true. I would avoid them.

I think UnivestDirect offers a nice online checking and savings option. And, fortunately, they recently updated and improved their site too.
