  • Wow, stocks getting battered again

"This market is going down like free beer..." said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jeffries & Co.

Is this a buying opportunity or should we sit this out for a while?

Hehe, I checked my investment portfolio earlier today, and boy did it take a noticeable drop.

Personally? Tis the season to buy buy buy! Don't know when the market will bottom out, but hey, that's the stock market for ya.

But then, I'm in it for the long haul anyway. Buy and hold.

          Good stuff.

But what about having a floating amount of cash on hand to allow you to buy on dips and sell on spikes? If you're full throttle on equities all the time, you can't take advantage of market swings (except with new money).

Take a look at some UltraShort ETFs like SRS and SKF.
Short homebuilders and short mortgage lenders.

I'm staying the course. About 80% stocks right now.

I did today put another $600 into US stocks. I'm an optimist, but also patient. I only check my balance when i get my monthly statement.

I think they will continue to correct another 5-10%. I've started buying more than my regular amount in the past few weeks and I will continue to buy more all the way down.

                  My silver really tanked today.

It's frustrating when funds use it as a hedge against losses so it's natural on a day like today they dump it.

I wish I had some cash on hand to buy some more.

I should have moved my Janus Fund back when I was debating it here.

                  You think I'd learn. . .

In another thread your stated that you were concerned about a future layoff. I am thinking that this isn't the time to tie up money in the stock market if you are concerned about a layoff.

Why do you wish you moved it back then? You'd have lost more money than by keeping it in your Janus Fund had you done that. If you want to move it and you think silver will come back, do it now.

I did my bills today, and whenever I pay bills I send off $50 to my taxable mutual fund. I did the same today as I do every other bill-paying-day.

Yes, perceptive. Actually I've built up a decent retirement fund and I consider that money long-term and separate from my short-term needs/problems. Hopefully if I did get laid off, it wouldn't last long enough to exhaust my EF and force me to dip into my retirement savings.

                            KV,

Yeah, I was on the fence about moving the Janus Fund into a bond fund while things cooled.

                            I should have.

I was thinking more along the lines of you wanting to move it into your silver fund. If you had, you would have taken a bigger hit than just staying put.

Actually, even some of the bond market is kinda shaky. Going cash might be a better option at this point. And by cash I mean MMF's.
