What are the benefits of loaded mutual funds? Are there any?

There aren't any that I can see. The fee that's incurred right from the beginning is one that most that can't hurdle. Some will argue that you're paying for better management and the like but a high load fee is a daunting task for a fund to overcome. One slight (and popular) exception to this may be American Funds. Over time some of their funds have performed better than others but it's hard to determine if they're better overall due to the huge 5.75% load fee. I must admit I have some money in a couple of their funds, but that's because they were gifted to me by my grandmother when I was young. I'll admit, they're performing quite well but I wouldn't invest in them on my own doing.The easiest thing of all is to deceive one's self; for what a man wishes, he generally believes to be true.
