  • Any good books on investing?

I just went to the book store to pick up a book on investing (stocks, mutual funds for the long term or any general knowledge as I am a newbie). I noticed that there are a lot of books out there.

I know it takes discipline, time and research to invest properly. So I just want some knowledge to make some proper decisions in the future when I am ready.

I wanted to know what you guys out there read and recommend.

    Thanks!

There are lots of great books on personal finance - BUT DON'T BUY ONE! Go to your local library - my library listed 258 titles. Also, you can look at issues of Money magazine, Smart Money magazine etc there also.

Thanks for the good info... I haven't been to a library for quite some time now. Looks like I will pay them a visit soon.

Any other books that you guys recommend?

Re: Any good books on investing?

"The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read", by Daniel R. Solin; from Perigee Publishing, 2006.

Mr. Solin extols the virtues of indexed no-load mutual funds in this book. He offers compelling evidence that, for most of us, passive funds will beat managed funds about 95% of the time. He further contends that asset allocation is really the only area in which most of us need to exercise judgement concerning risk management. This book is a quick and simple read, but it makes a lot of good sense.

Thanks rwgraves! This is very good. I often wonder if I will ever do better actively managing a stock portfolio... if a pro can't do it. I definitely can't (unless I get very lucky).

At some point in my career, I want to supplement my normal income with the gains of my investment.

I think "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" by Burton Malkiel is a great introductory book. It's actually fun to read, you don't need to be a number cruncher to enjoy it. Plenty of good advice - Malkiel is a Princeton economics professor.

                Thanks Honkus.

I think there is enough on the list to keep me busy for a while.

Re: Any good books on investing?

Although I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, I've heard that "The Four Pillars of Investing : Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio" by William J. Bernstein is also quite good.

Go to Amazon.com when you find a book you think you want to read and see what the reviews say first. There's usually a lot of good feedback from readers to help you make your decision.

I like The Wealthy Barber.by David Chilton, Debt proof living by Mary Hunt and the only ohter investment guide you'll ever need, by Andrew Tobias. All are simple and easy to read.

When I saw how much we were being taxed on our property taxes for the library, I thought that I should go over there and utilize this incredible resourse. You can also get audio books. Anyway, I have bught books and asked myself why I bought them.

I've always believed that if you only one thing out of a book of seminar that changed your thinking - you got the whole book or the siminar. You only need one light bulb moment that will change the way you think forever and then it was all worth it.

I like ALL YOUR WORTH. Elizabeth Warren. It's a realistic look into getting you to saving the big money not the coupons. I save the coupons, but she want to get you on the right track from the beginning.

It's very good, although also very dense. Reads very much like a textbook, and I had to force myself through it. Worth it because the content was so good. It's funny because apparently this IS his "easily accessible" version, written because his last book was even more difficult to wade through for the average person like me.

I would love it if Alan Sloan (columnist writing for Newsweek) ever came out with a book. I find Jane Bryant Quinn's articles pretty horrible by comparison - I think she gives some pretty bad advice.
