  • Commerce Bank experience

Hey, I don't post very much, but I lurk around here a lot. I wanted to know what you folks would do in my position.

I went to open a commerce bank checking account about 2 months ago. They had some cash incentives for signing up for a direct deposit, signing up for online bill pay, etc. All I wanted to do was to sign up for a checking account. I told the banker this as well. My two friends with me wanted to get credit cards, but I did not because I know that my credit score is not good enough to get approved.

About three weeks later, I get a statement in the mail saying that I was declined from getting a credit card. I called the bank multiple times and got a phone call back a few days later. The banker apologized for this happening, but he said that there was nothing they could do about it. He said it probably happened because he got me confused with one of my friends. I argued with him for probably 10-15 minutes, but he was very firm about Commerce Bank not making amends.

This is upsetting to me because I don't have a great credit score as it is, and this is only going to put another dent in it. What can I do about this? Is there someone or some organization that I can contact? Keep in mind that I can't afford to pay for a lawyer, etc. Thanks a lot.

    Re: Commerce Bank experience

Your first step is probably certified letter to the bank. Something similar to this sample letter. Next stop would be a certified letter to the credit reporting agency disputing the inquiry. Then you may have to file a complaint with the FTC if it's still not resolved.

Having said that, you may find that it's just not worth it to pursue. The unauthorized credit check, although extremely irritating, will probably not affect your credit score much. Then there is the time and money in corresponding with these people. And finally sometimes when attempting to correct flubs like this, worse things happen -- for example, instead of removing the credit inquiry, you end up getting a second inquiry put on your report.

    It's your call. Good luck.
