Mathew, thanks for jumping in with explaining the difference. I think a lot of new investors get confused with the difference between Retirement accounts and investments! I remember reading a financial advisor was lamenting how people thing that they 'buy' IRAs like CDs.

Before jumping in with both feet, I suggest that you take a step back and do some homework. You're young and have a whole life ahead of you to save and invest. Sit down and determine your investment goals. Talk to a few people that are savy about investing, such as people here on this forum or maybe someone that you know from your town like a friend or family member. Buy a few books on investing and read them. You may want to even consider taking some of that video game money and taking a basic investing class at a local community college. It will probably only cost you a few hundred dollars and about 10 to 16 weeks of your time. Defenitely educate yourself about the subject before you spend a dime. Then you'll know exactly what you want and where you want to go.

And always keep in mind that there are no perfect solutions, only inteligent choices. For every opinion you hear or read about investing and finance, there is probably someone out there who believes exactly the opposite just as strongly. About the only thing everyone seems to agree on is that it's wiser to live within your means than to go into debt for things you don't really need.

Sorting through the opinions and figuring out which ones make the most sense to you (and especially "Why") is the biggest chalenge. Information abounds, but figuring out what works best for you takes time.
