  • Is the gold run over?

Gold is down to $578/oz from a high of $725 about 4 months ago. Is the gold run over?

The run up. I believe gold is priced ridiculously high.

I think the run up is over. Gold is an inflation hedge and inflation isn't bad right now. That said, I think owning gold and precious metals interests is a good idea as a small portion, perhaps 5%, of a well-diversified portfolio.

I don't think the run up is anywhere near over. Now is a great time to buy, IMHO. In an Elliott Wave analysis the price might drop to the low $500s before taking off again.

Inflation-adjusted the price of gold would have to be north of $1400/ounce to top its high in the early 1980s. By that standard, gold is still cheap.

But in the early 80s, we had double digit inflation. If we see that again, then yes, gold probably will shoot up as a hedge. But if inflation remains modest, I'm not sure the economic pressure to elevate gold prices exists.

Again, I'm not arguing against owning gold interests. I think you should. I'm just not sure that prices will be skyrocketing any time soon.

Yeah, what a difference a year can make. Could go higher still if the Fed cuts rates again... We'll see.

                    I like the picture.

The pic seems apt, because you see the Gold Prospectors narrowly escaping the doom of a house falling from a precipice (ironic use of a security symbol). It's from, of course, the 1925 film "The Gold Rush." I'm surprised I don't see this pic on Daily Reckoning, or Calculated Risk blogs, for all its aptness.

I wouldn't sell Gold but I may buy it for a long term hold and dollar cost average a bit. I will with my silver.
