I have been going through my late mother's personal things and found a $5 silver certificate. Any idea how I can find out what it is worth? I realize I'm not going to be rich, but I don't want to get ripped off, either.

from .99 to $3001.00 = so I'd proceed with caution.

Most silver certificates are only worth face-value. Many are worth a little more depending on date and condition with a very few being of greater value.
Some basic info
This price list (sammler.com ) indicating the value of $5 silver certificates begins with quality level VG (very good) and prices various dates of this quality at $6 and $7. Lesser quality is worth face-value. Higher quality is rare and is worth, as I indicated above slightly more. Only bills in uncirculated quality are worth substantially more.

It might be worth more to a collector. Do a Google search of currency and coin collectors and contact them for details.

Silver certificates are one of those things that our parents and grandparents generations horded or "put away". However if you are frugal or budgeted selling what might be a common speciman of a silver certificate increase you spending money. Example, I used to collect coins when various parents passed on we found lots of morgan silver dollars , most of my family were appalled to learn that they weren't worth much becuase of condition ( just like comic books), they're cool and filled with history but we are not better off due to having our hoard.
