Re: Ways To Save Over $100

I relocated last year. My new address is within walking distance of my office, a grocery, the post office and a library branch. Because I like to walk, my gasoline savings have been phenomenal, well over $50 a month.

This year, I thought to notify my auto insurer that I was driving much less. I had to document my mileage with oil change receipts, but the difference amounted to $50 every six months.

Finally, I realized that I hadn't missed my daily newspaper. The paper failed to make the change to my new address. I canceled the subscription -- $174 annual cost. Instead, I buy the Sunday edition for the ads/coupons and pick up the grocery insert when I'm at the store.

TO SAVE A $100 the first thing that comes to mind is drop the cell & long distance I did both these I only use calling cards I get for free for long distance calling another would be drop cable its around $130 a month here for cable & internet & all that together!! Next I would say learn to cook from scratch at first buying all the stuff to make things from scratch is pricy but you will come out ahead!!

I have no landline, but I do have cellphone. However, it's furnished by my company so.... No phone bills either!

If I ever need a phone though, I'm tempted to try out Vonage since I really don't want to give up my broadband, or perhaps a pre-pay if I want to stick to a cellphone.

Internet access is the only non-essential expense that I pay right now, and that's currently $40 per month.

You mean dial-up? I can get it for $10 per month, but ... I really like broadband.

On phones, some big buisnesses offer discounts to employees of other big buisnesses...ask around, you might get same service for less.

If you are a pet lover, please don't get mad, cause I am too. I think it is important to get puppies all the shots they require the first year.
But, I have a stray that I found and after getting her spayed, I have not given her any more shots. She is very healthy and an out side dog,but never leaves the yard. I don't know how old she was when i found her (she was grown) but I have had her for 14 1/2 years. I must have saved a fortune in yearly shots. (she has never been sick once)

Transfer your emergency fund/savings to a high yield account.

I recently purchased a $10,000 CD for 5.25%. I took the money from my relatively low yielding money market account (about 3%). That extra 2.25% will mean an additional $225 per year in interest.

I transferred another $3,000 to a higher yielding money market (4.95% currently). That will get me another $59 extra interest.

Even if you don't have large amounts to more, every little bit helps.

Re: Ways To Save Over $100

Yesterday I signed up for a "boot camp" fitness program. Really need someone to kick my a$$ because I don't seem to be able to do it myself these days. It cost $285 for 3x a week for 4 weeks. I was kinda mad at myself for spending the money because things are pretty tight these days. But my health should be top priority, and it keeps getting pushed down the daily "to do" list. Anyway, by sheer coincidence, my job reminded us today that they reimburse all employees up to $100 each year for health clubs, weight loss programs, etc. Bingo! Instant $100 savings!

Actually there are some research studies that show antibodies stay in a pet's system for up to five years, so you only need to vaccinate every three years.

There are places you can buy vaccines and do it yourself, so it is about $10 every three years. It is not that expensive.

It is worth it, in my opinion, since every emergency vet visit costs thousands of dollars.

Well, i color my own hair about every 2 months. I am sure that adds up to hundreds in savings each year.

I agree!!! Haircolorists are overrated, especially since they come up with better formulas for hair color every year.

I think beauty treatments should always to be done at home. With the money saved you can afford better products, even better than the ones they use.

There had been times I found products 75% off and for the amount I spend for a haircut ($10) I could prochase products Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston use.

I sure wish I can find ways to lower my cell phone cost. Being deaf, I need the unlimited text and internet service on the phone. Using the Relay service, high speed internet is required. I made sacrifices of canceling Comcast high speed internet at home and because of that, I will not be able to use the video relay serve for the deaf. It’s so nice to chat with other deafies via sign language on the T.V. and makes it so much more personal than text or using Instant messaging. The phone is a must because of work and driving clients around and would need instant contact method if any emergency were to happen.

Right now I am paying 63.00 a month on my cell. I asked if I could get some fee waived as I have never used a single minute on call part of the phone (because I can’t hear the phone) and only use text and internet. So far no carriers are willing to do that or give a discount.

Giving up home internet saved me some money. Now I just have to becareful to not plan a lot of dinner arrangment to meet up with deaf social events.

gruntina, did you really type that whole note on your phone? with itty bitty keys? or do you use a library computer or special keyboard or something?

and 63 is less than my net plus phone...so if you look at it as two bills rather than one it isn't as bad....

                                A few ideas I haven't seen yet:

                                1) Pay your property taxes and house insurance directly, instead of through escrow. Mortgage companies are allowed to keep an amount above and beyond what they need to pay to your town/insurance as a buffer. By paying yourself, you get the buffer back (about $1700 in my case, but my property taxes are through the roof), and get interest on the money month-to-month.

                                2) Shop around for auto insurance, including raising deductibles. Also, check out any organizations you're affiliated with. My college has an agreement with Liberty Mutual where they'll save us 10% on our premiums.

                                3) Check out mail order for any prescriptions you take regularly. We have 2 prescriptions that cost us $25/month each through CVS, but $50/quarter through mail order. That's a savings of $100/year per perscription. I thought it would be a bigger hassle to order it this way, but it's actually easier and more convenient...
