  • Does anyone actively plan 'no gas' days?

I am out of work until mid-August ( I teach), so I have tried to implement 'no gas days'. I run errands (3-8 places) on Monday mornings, my son has art lessons on Tuesdays, and I try to make Wed-Fri. no gas days (except for Curves-I workout Mon-Fri.) I think being more organized has really helped-of course I have more time now to be more organized.

That's a good idea, to plan No-gas days. Except on my day off I really need to cut our lawn, I have all my errands to do that day. I live too far from work to bike and I live in Wisconsin, so weather can change at the drop of a hat. But, like you said to be more organized and planning could help.

I did not use to. I have very little to do, so i enjoyed riding to town once a day. (It is about 9-10 miles round trip. But since Gas has gotten so high, I do try and plan some days to just stay home and do all my errands on the other days. Monday is usually my busiest day.

If you owned a bike, you could avoid curves on friday.

I did a week without gas, up until I needed to haul somethings. Soon as the fathers day/bbq/4th of july gap is over, I'll try my best to make more on pedal power.

No. But, I am staying home alot more because I really just don't enjoy shopping anymore. If we have a nice day, I prefer to just work around the yard, take a walk, play with the kids, etc. Shopping always equals spending. So, I don't worry that much about the gas costs because I rarely take any unnecessary trips anyway. When you no longer do recreational shopping, it saves a bundle!

I do it by default, planning my weekly errands to use the car as little as possible. Then I either stay home or walk to my local destinations on the other days of the week.

Anybody else notice how unusual it seems to actually spend an entire day at home? People around here never seem to make it through a whole day without dashing off somewhere. I'd never thought about it until I read about no-spend days here.

I have "no gas" days but it is more out of weariness from spending 7.5 hours commuting during the work week than an attempt to save money.

For instance, when it is nice weather we usually go for the pool over the beach. The community pool is a 3/4 mile walk and the beach is a five minute drive. We don't think about gas, we just think about ease of transportation and environment (no hunting for parking and no dealing with large crowds).

Not really. I spend $9.00/week on gas. When my gas runs out, I take the bus, for which I have a free pass.

Re: Does anyone actively plan 'no gas' days?

Until recently, yes. I work 12 hour shifts; 6 shifts/2 weeks - Tu/We, Sa/Su, Th/Fr. My car would stay parked from the time I got home from one 2 day work period until I left home for the next one. I worked night shift (7p-7a) and could run all my errands on my way to work - either before my first shift, or after my second one. I recently moved to day shift (same days but 7a-7p) so am no longer able to run all my errands on the way to or from work - most, but not all. The butcher shop, bakery, used book store, and the feed store that I prefer are not open before or after my shift, so I do have to make the occasional extra trip to town - usually once a month or every 6 weeks. I group all my errands on that day.

I also recently became the primary caregiver for my elderly father, who is a hospice patient. I sometimes find myself running in to our small nearby village to mail a letter or pick up something at the store when a responsible family member stops by to visit - chores that could easily be done on my next work day; but I need the break.

Unfortunatly we have none most weeks, DH works M-F about 35 minutes away, and one of those days he has to get groceries, then Sunday is church 20 min drive, and Saturday we usually catch up on odd errends, though we could cut them if we tried, in fact this week we will, We are going out for fathers day tonight, so I will try to NOT go anywhere on Saturday.

I can't do a no gas day unless I stay home on the weekend and I do that often enough anyway.

I do have the 3 mile rule. I can only drive 3 miles in a day 3-4 days a week. This is ling enough to get to light rail, the gym and back. I can't walk to light rail have too many freeway entrances and exits to try to get there without killing myself. And I love the gym pool to do laps and take classes.
