Living on 35-36K a year with three vehicles is impressive. Did you pay off your mortgage while the both of you were working before you had children? Do you live in Boston? San Francisco? San Diego? Seattle? Did you buy your house prior to 2000? How's the cost of living where you are?

Sorry that was unclear, we do have a mortgage, it's around 65k right now. We just finally got serious about our finances a year ago. Have paid down non-mortgage debt from about 50k to less than half that in the past 8 months. We aim to be completely debt-free (including the mortgage) in 4-5 years (or less if I can help it ).

I live in Oklahoma, cost of living is less than most places. Then again, the income around here isn't as well as other places. We bought this home in 2004, it was a foreclosure sale that we were able to get an awesome price. The value of it has doubled from what we paid for it in the past two years.

i wonder if any of these people get that social security statement that projects how much they will get to live on? I am supposed to get less than $500 a month to live on. I don't see how that can be done?? Even if you own your home free and clear, you still have utilities, taxes on the property, house insurance. I really don't want to eat cat food!!

We have built houses for people that act so rich. They have big jobs and make big money but they blow it all!! Try and get the money out of them to pay their building materials bills. Then you find out how very little savings they have, cause they have a terrible time getting the money. Most of the time they have to borrow the money and then they run out cause they want everything so fancy.
One customer paid over $5000 to have the hardwood flooring installed. My husband would do it for less than $1000, but they were in a hurry. They also paid $45,000 for cabinets when my husband could have built them for less than $10,000 and done a much better job. They just like to blow their money!!

We are lucky we live in a fairly low cost area, but house and land prices are going sky high!! I think people have always thought we were well to do cause we have always had a real nice house. That is easy, when your husband knows how to build and do everything else inside the house.

A mountain view lot in my area is going for over $100,000. They were about $30,000 about 2 years ago.
