I just to walk to my previous job only a few blocks away. Now, DH drops me off at work. He uses a company vehicle and all gas and upkeep is paid by them.
I'm not sure exactly how far distance wise I am from my work, but it takes me about 5 minutes to walk there at a moderate pace. I go home every day for lunch, so I end up walking ~20 minutes a day without even trying.
I drive but only cause of all the equipment I have to haul well thats part of why I have to drive & I have so much I have to all no one else would fit in my car so car pooling isnt an option. I have considered at different times working in the school if I apply next fall & get a job thier I would walk its only 2 blocks. I could be a lunch lady or get on with the afterschool program would probably save me alot I could even sale my car.
I drive to downtown Tampa. Once there, I trolley or walk. While Tampa is a small "big" city, it has good transport to all areas including historical districts.
PS, I did look into public transportation, which there is, but for the smal distance I'm commuting, it would require someone to drive me to the nearest bus stop for that route... and then it would take about twice as long to get there, then I'd have to walk from the stop to work. It drags the <15 minute commute out to about 45 minutes, plus involves a car to get me to the stop anyway. Not worth it.
And, after day 1 at the new job -- even though it's more like 8-9 miles to get to the University, (<4 miles to the preschool where I used to work) it takes less time! It all depends on which way you're going...
I bought a little old 1982 Honda 250cc Motorcycle for $900 that I use to get to and from work every day (even in the winter!) My commute is about 2 miles each way, I live in center-city philadelphia, and with the 50+mpg, $35 a YEAR insurance, and no payments, its actually cheaper than driving and paying for parking, or taking the bus (which costs about $4 a day).
No commute here but I get good exercize working here at home, I walk to the barn for work, then the garden, then in the house, then, then. LOL, probably put in 3-4 miles a day without even trying.
Hubby drives about 35 miles one way for work, no one to car pool with and his hours can vary so driving is mandatory for him.
