  • Balancing a Check Book

I still keep a written ledger for my checkbook, as my debit card is my primary means of spending, and my bills are paid from my checking.
I was surprised to learn that almost no one does this anymore, especially younger people.
Does anyone else still keep a check book ledger?

Only in part. I do record checks as they're written ... But I don't ever balance the account. There's always too much in motion, and frankly I don't see it worth the time .... I prefer to just keep an adequate float in my checking account to cover the day-to-day fluctuations, and I leave it at that. If I've written a large check, or I know a big EFT draft is coming, I'll increase the float. I know generally what expenses to expect when, so I don't worry about the details. Besides, anymore, I only write maybe 2-3 checks in a year. Everything else has gone electronic.
