  • What does it take to be an Actuary?

Anybody here an Actuary? Anybody know anything about them?

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

I'm fairly certain I'm going to be one of those boring, paper-pushing pencil geeks though... since I'm already sort of one. Now, I just have to find an occupation where they'll PAY ME to be one.

What other professions should I look into at my nearby, friendly career fair?

Back when I was in college getting my B.S. in math, I explored the idea of being an actuary. At the time there were ten exams to pass (not all during school), but I think one needed to pass the first 1 (3? it's been a while since I've thought about this) in order to get an entry level position (assuming you had an acceptable degree as well, of course).

I had aspirations at one time, but that was almost 17 years ago. Things were different then I'm sure.

There's an industry instructional site called http://www.beanactuary.org . Actuaries make good money according to http://www.dwsimpson.com/salary.html .

Interesting. My employer would pay for me to become one (with bonus on completion of a certain number of exams), but I am pretty content with my current path. I've done enough work just to handle claims!
