  • Sales Prices & Advertising In General

I've been in the market for a new portable power station for a while. I'd watched several reviews and the Jackery brand has floated to the top for me.

Yesterday while looking over their site, the model I had in mind was listed on sale for Earth Day. Marked down to $800 from $1500. I can't honestly say I'd seen this model for sale anywhere for over $1,000 so I thought their mark down smelled funny. But since I was ready to make the purchase, I decided to take advantage of the sale.

This morning I looked the unit back up, expecting to see it back to the original price of $1,500 right? Nope, $850.

The price I had in my head for this device was around $900 from looking at it a few months ago. The sale more or less saved me the equivalent of the sales tax. I'm not complaining, but wanted to point out, be weary of sales and FOMO. The sales count down timer is intended to push the FOMO angle I'm sure. $50 is $50 and I'll take it, but if I bought yesterday or missed the sale and bought today, it isn't that much of a savings given the overall price.

Seems to be a common tactic.
I often see "sale" prices on websites and in stores that are exactly the same as the regular price.
Simply having a fake higher price with a slash through it, then a "lower" price in red just below it is a very powerful marketing tool.
