  • Saving on household cleaning items

Common chemicals such as bleach, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and baking soda can often be just as effective as store bought items
Discount and store brand versions of name brand items can sometimes be just as good
    Watch for coupons and sales
Buying in bulk can help save, especially on items with a long shelf life. Check online or at warehouse club stores like Sams or Costco
Name brand can be okay even if it costs more if it is more effective than a generic equivalent
Investing in a steam mop can clean floors chemical free

I'll second that ... We do 90% of our cleaning with water, vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap. DW even makes her own bricks of dishwasher detergent with baking soda, dish soap, and citric acid, and they do a pretty good job, all considered. The only thing she hasn't figured a good replacement for is laundry soap. But she's gotten to using these "all natural" dissolving soap strips ... I dunno ... Periodically I'll add a bunch of vinegar or some bleach to a load to pick up the slack.

For cleaning the interior of my truck, I have abandoned using Armor All wipes.

A microfiber rag soaked in hot water does a superior job and doesn't leave residue behind.

Similarly, I no longer use Pledge for dusting, opting for the microfiber with hot water instead.
