  • The Symbolism Behind The Great Seal

    All,

This posting is for everyone who's looked at the back of a 1 dollar bill, and wondered what the story was with the image of the pyramid.

So the pyramid is the back of the great seal of the United States. The great seal is the official emblem of the United States. Its used to authenticate official documents and represents the sovereignty of the country. The state department stamps it on official documents and its the symbol on the podium for official press conferences and meetings.

The front of the symbol is the eagle and the back is a pyramid. There is actually some pretty cool symbolism behind the great seal of the United States.

That's the back of a dollar bill.

The symbolism behind the eagle is pretty well known. The eagle symbolizes strength. The olive branch and arrows in the eagles talons indicate desire for peace and willingness to fight.

The symbolism of the pyramid is significantly less well known, but its interesting. The eye at the top of the pyramid represents the eye of providence.

    There are two mottos:
    - Annuit coeptis: Providence has "approved of our undertakings".
    - Novus ordo seclorum: "A new order of the ages".

The date given in roman numerals is 1776, the year of the Declaration of Independence. And according to the explanation given by Charles Thomson during the presentation of the seal to congress, the pyramid signifies strength and duration. The eye and the mottos allude to Gods support for the new American Era, which commenced from the date the declaration.

So, there you have it, that's the symbolism behind the seal.
