I just opened my water bill and power bill to pay for the month. Included in the water bill was a leaflet which read:
"We are excited to announce our ServLine Leak Protection Program. With AUTOMATIC ENROLLMENT you will be protected from having to pay a high water bill and avoid interruption to service"
For only $2 per month I am protected up to $2,500 per leak.
On the back there is a photo of a little old lady with her story:
"My neighbors felt sorry for me after seeing different companies mark my yard for electric and water lines before the backhoe began to dig. They said that must have been might expensive and wanted to know how much it cost. I proudly said nothing. My ServLine Line Protection offered by the utility covered the full amount! It paid $1575 to the plumber to replace 25 feed of my water line".
"*Call to REQUEST a full copy of program protections and exclusions."
And in small print: "Call us to decline protection and accept full responsibility for water bills caused by water leaks."
First and foremost, marking utilities is FREE.
Secondly who the heck does the water department think they are to sign me up for an INSURANCE policy with out my consent.
Thirdly I happen to be the sort who rifles through all the garbage they shove in the envelope just for this reason but how many people are going to completely miss this, and get hit with the extra $2 charge every month.
My typical water bill runs $12 per month. Looking back, I did have a leak in 2011 which cost me $149 dollars of water. I paid $1000 to run a new water line from the road to my house.
On paper, $24 per year, times 50 years is $1200 seems like it MIGHT be reasonable, but for some reason, primarily the auto enroll, this just STINKS!
