  • Ever get a paycheck you didn't feel you deserve?

My wife is now going to get ~$2000 a yr for an elected position she holds. Its basically 4-6hrs a month and she feels it should be volunteer and not paid. What would you do with the money? We have kids in private school so the money will change the amount of aid we receive.

I supposed she can return it or give it to charity as a tax deduction if it helps.

At 6 hours per month, that’s about $28/hour which certainly isn’t anything crazy. If she’s doing the job, she deserves the pay that goes with it.

If it will reduce the financial aid, as it should, then use the money to make up for the reduced aid.

Are you saying the amount of aid for the private school will become less than will be cleared from this new salary?

This is what makes the most sense to me.

Elected officials are paid and not volunteers so that they attract more than just people who can afford to volunteer their time and to reflect the value of the position. While this doesn't always even out in practice, there is a reason behind it even if she feels she doesn't deserve it. Perhaps just use that income as your financial aid?

Thanks for the responses. Our original thought was to donate it all. Probably going to donate 25% and keep the rest until we see how much our financial aid is reduced by.

Great problem to have. But no, I feel I deserve every paycheck I've ever received. I've exchanged my limited life hours to work, so my time is very valuable to me and my family.

I got a paycheck once that I knew I didn't deserve since it wasn't mine. It was direct deposited into my account within a month or so of me having to stop working. I called me company to tell them I had gotten $500+ and that they needed to take it back. No one contacted me about, and over the years I had gotten tired of having to WORK to give people their money back. I was really sick at the time besides and just didn't have the oomph to worry about it.

It was only years later that I realized that the week I took off for my honeymoon right before I got sick and stopped working, had been paid in full at the beginning of the year. I had never earned it completely as vacation time!
