hate to break it to you, but probably every adult with a credit card's identity was already stolen. Half of the population of the united states - the other half is probably under 18 or doesn't have credit cards.

Credit monitoring company Equifax has been hit by a high-tech heist that exposed the Social Security numbers and other sensitive information about 143 million Americans.

Ive never heard of anyone being stuck with eating the $50...they always eat the fee out of the "kindness" of their hearts, lol. Im guessing they have insurance for this very thing...but either way...wouldnt that make you furious!
they just dont want the amazingly bad PR from being the only company sticking people with the fee

I actually know someone that was charged the fee. They were even trying to stick her with the charges. Honestly, I didn't blame them because she admitted to not knowing where her credit card was for a long time, and then just didnt pay her bill for several months because she knew the charges were not hers. She didn't even call to dispute them, she just waited for them to call her. I think she got off easy. But she was the type to withdraw all the money out of her 403b just because she wanted to buy something expensive, so there you go. She did that twice that I know of and was shocked both times that she had to pay taxes on it.

to be quite honest, the software they use to catch fraudulent charges is pretty damn good nowadays, so you likely don't even need to do anything, and they'll deny or flag out suspicious charges for you. Obviously it's for their benefit mostly since they're the ones stuck footing the bill for those charges.

As soon as one of these charges go through, many of these companies will immediately text, email, and call you to ask if they should block it. lol
