Since it has been more than 30 days, it's up to me how to handle it. They said I could have the buyer return the item at their own expense and upon receipt, refund them up to 80% deducting 20% as a restocking fee.

I'm not sure what I'd do if the buyer returns the item trashed, though. I guess I could make the refund contingent on getting the book back in the same condition I shipped it, but that then comes down to my word against his as to what the original condition was.
Steve, I don't know who you talked to, but your response makes me suspicious your were dealing with the fruitcake customer service reps that don't know the rules - at all!. As far as I can tell from following the forum there, we are still in the Christmas return timeframe and all other rules are subordinate to that. Personally I would want to tell them to go jump in an icy creek. If you like I could ask the forum folks if books get a special waiver at this time of year, but I suspect that the buyer knows exactly what they are doing. By asking NOW for the return they now get extra time to use the book before sending it back, because Amazon can send them a new auto-refund prepaid return label! and they get a certain amount of time to return it now. New rule as of a couple of months ago.

And I'm guessing to add insult to injury, that prepaid return shipping label is coming out of the seller's pocket as well

Funny, Amazon support made no mention of that in their response to me. I guess I'll wait and hear what he says. If he is willing to return the book and I receive it in the same condition it was in when I sent it out, I'll give him a refund minus a restocking fee.
