I don't feel like I am getting one over on them, but my conscious is still ticking in the back ground. That said do not plan on chasing them down and saying they must take my (their) money.
This would definitely be as far as I would take it. I'd still keep the money on hand to pay the bill if and when it comes but I wouldn't keep wasting my time trying to convince them to take my money.

This issue has finally been resolved. They finally emailed a thank you and included the invoice. The check is in the mail.

If I had not followed up with them, sooner or later the invoice would have shown up. While I should be able to pay $700 at a moments notice at any point in the foreseeable future, it is still good to have it cleared out now, rather than be a surprise on some future rainy day.

Thank you all for your opinions and thoughts on the matter!

If you feel your conscious is ticking, I would get to a doctor right away.

ethical issue, but if you know about it, and it seems like he forgot, i think you should go ahead and remind him. who knows, perhaps he'll give you a discount or cheaper price on future work? Even without a financial incentive, you should do it because it's the right thing to do. It doesnt matter if it's his fault, his accountant's fault, his computer crashing, invoice lost in mail, whatever, if you know you have a duty to pay, you should at the least inform them. If at that point, they refuse to invoice you, that's on them.

I bought an item on ebay 2 weeks ago for $1300. I received it last week, but the USPS bar code was torn off. So, while I received the item, the tracking shows that it is still in transit (and will never show as delivered). I could just claim I didn't receive the item, in which case I'll get refunded $1300 and keep the item, but that amounts to theft. Similarly, if you know you owe someone money, and don't pay it (invoice or not), it's theft. Say you sell your moped to an acquaintance for $700 to be paid later, then subsequently forget about it because you've been busy. Does that mean your acquaintance doesn't owe you the $700 since you never invoiced him?

Oh goodness, wouldn't we on-line sellers like more buyers like you!!! I know I had requests for refunds from folks who thought they were getting garments and not a sewing pattern, one insisting the listing page was incorrect! But on the Amazon forums a lot of sellers have their returns up by a huge %. Apparently there are books and articles on line on how to get free stuff from Amazon, ebay, probably etzy as well. And you named one of the primo ways. One guy said in his 'return' box, the buyer had dumped their literal garbage in the box, so not only was he out the product, the money, the shipping, he also had to pay for them to ship him literal garbage! It is discouraging. These scammers and cheaters never stop to think that perhaps the person they bought from needs every penny they take in! Not all or even most sellers are millionaires.

I actually sell a fair amount on ebay as well. My seller account has 2500 feedback. I think the vast majority of ebay buyers are honest, like 99.9% although I'm not sure what they'd do if it was a situation where they could easily get away with, such as the seller not including tracking at all. If you package the item well, and include tracking/sig confirm/insurance where applicable, they can still rip you off, but it will take effort on their part to perpetuate the fraud.

The return scam is one of the bigger (and easier) ones for people to get away with. Ebay only cares that "a" package was sent to the seller, they dont care about the content. I think after enough times, the buyer gets blacklisted. But that really doesn't help the sellers that were scammed.
