Expensive new hobby

The last time we played, I picked Jefferson's Ocean (a bourbon) and his first question was if it was a scotch. His next guess was Hibiki Suntory (a Japanese whiskey) since I've managed to confuse him with that one in the past. After that, he had to think awhile, but he finally came up with the right answer.

Jefferson's Ocean is a great example of a gimmicky whiskey. It's aged at sea, because supposedly, moving while aging makes a difference. My husband decided he wanted a bottle even though he was pretty sure it was just a silly gimmick. He likes it, but not any better than the slightly-less-expensive, aged-on-land Jefferson's Reserve.

That's interesting. My experience is totally different. I tried Ocean at the event recently with the prior knowledge that I'm not a fan of regular Jefferson's. I really liked the Ocean, though. It tastes totally different. It almost doesn't taste like bourbon. If someone gave it to me blindly, I'm not sure I would identify it as bourbon. I haven't picked up a bottle yet but plan to at some point since I find it to be such a different product than other bourbons.

This just illustrates how much personal taste matters. Everyone's sense of taste is different. One person may taste a bourbon and get strong vanilla notes while someone else will taste oak or honey. Nobody is wrong. It's just how your sense of taste works.
