  • VERY Surprised... I actually saved a bundle on my Auto Insurance!

I live in SE Michigan. We have notoriously high auto insurance costs (I hear large reason is no limit to damages against liability benefits for victims).

I just switched from AAA --> Progressive insurance. Price went from ~$2,400 annually --> ~$1375. This includes Auto + Roadside assistance (For wife and I's cars!). Also changed homeowners insurance from $840 --> $790.
**I did the quote online, and it seemed like BS, so I called to confirm if it was really that low, and signed up right off the bat.

I basically kept the same coverage for auto, and increased my liability coverage for my home by $200k per person for limit. I was stunned at how much it changed. I have been w/ AAA for 14 years, wife and I have good credit, no points, and agreed to pay lump sum amount for additional savings (6 mo @ a time). I guess there is ALSO a chance to lower cost by up to ~30% by using the "snap in place" dongle to track my driving aggressiveness.

*I asked, and Progressive said "bad driving data from dongle can not increase my insurance, only lower it if I am driving well". They said it is some state of Michigan law, when I asked if I would be in jeopardy of exposing myself to potentially higher insurance.

Also, we get a cumulative $50 taken off of deductible for every 6-months accident free driving.

I recall shopping for insurance, maybe 4 years ago, and not seeing anything close to this good of a deal (or major break at all from AAA price) for full coverage insurance....

This really was a pleasant surprise. I'll be saving right around an extra $1k a year.

Maybe this will inspire some loyal insurance customers on this site to consider "shopping around".

Hate to be cliche, but I just saved a S*** Load of money that would have been thrown away by switching to Progressive!

Voluntarily letting Big Brother track your every move is not how a people stays free.

I would imagine "big brother" already has the capability and is probably doing that w/ every smart phone.

In this case, I'll take the low road, with the savings.

I'm spoiled here in Western PA.
I'm paying $60 a month for full coverage.

We hate GEICO. My wife hates GEICO.

Soon after switching from Progressive to them (my idea, to save money) someone called them, pretended to be my DW and said that she was in an at fault accident. We, of course, didn't know that happened, and were shocked that the next bill skyrocketed. GEICO said they couldn't do anything about it even though there wasn't an accident report.

We dropped them quick for Allstate, and are now back to Progressive.

We get into an accident every time I think about switching, and we were told we have to wait 1 year after an accident before a new insurance co will take us. My father backed into my husband's car this summer, so we wait again! I don't think that we could be saving all that much anyway. We pay about $2,500 to insured 2 newer cars, a trailer, and the house with the highest medical and liability limits.

I recall trying Geico a long time ago. But they were much higher in Michigan (at that time) compared to even AAA.

Maybe some laws or other legal framework have shifted around since then, and they would be competitive.

Either way, my savings are enough to keep me satisfied currently.

I still feel dumb for not investigating sooner (maybe even 2 or 3 years sooner!)
