  • Pink Tax at Target?

I am pregnant, expecting a girl, and have just started shopping for baby items online. While at Target.com, I noticed that two seemingly identical items, 1 pink and 1 blue were priced differently. The pink (aka girl) item is priced more at $4.69 vs. the blue item at $3.39. Am I missing something? Has anyone else seen examples of this gender pricing from Target regarding other items?

We don't shop Target, but there were a flood of Pink Tax articles six months ago.

I've done some online Target shopping recently and noticed price differences on articles whose only difference was color or pattern. A fabric headband that came in leopard print or solid colors. Solid color cost more. Same thing with a large barrette. The plainer one cost more. So I wouldn't put the price difference solely down to "pink tax".

I haven't been in target since they went social justice warrior on me with the trans-vestite/gender bathroom deal.

        Done.

Yeah, sadly I guess supporting equal rights is a real turn off for some.

As for the pricing difference, I would definitely call and complain about that.

According to your version of equal rights, men have the right to go into women's restrooms and whip out their schlongs, but women don't have the right to be able to go to the public restroom without seeing strange men whip out their schlongs.

I'd make a "positive" comparison of your version of equal rights to those of a certain country who just allowed women to drive, but that would push this thread even further OT.

Absolutely not! If a man exposes himself in public, the police should be called and he should be hauled off to jail. I definitely don't support that. I'm sure Target doesn't either.

As for the "pink tax", we often notice this when my wife and I are out shopping. Not only is women's clothing more expensive, it is often of lower quality. We were out and she was looking for polo shirts. In the same store, the men's shirts were cheaper and sturdier. The women's polos were more expensive and flimsier. So she bought a couple of men's shirts.

I noticed the polos last year when my daughter's school had a mother/daughter 80's dance and I wanted to go with the triple popped collar. Women's polos were more expensive in every store I checked. I also went with the men's version. Women pay more for dry cleaning and hair cuts as well.

I'm guessing that there is no intentional gender based inequality or discrimination going on here.

It's probably more of a supply/demand, inventory control, supply chain and logistics dynamic happening with these products. Having the same product offered in different colors/sizes can cause a lot of issues "behind the scenes" that the end user can't see and isn't aware of. Target's prices are probably set by a computer algorithm. The program is pricing based on factors not related to gender.

I agree in this case. It could be something simple like there was a price adjustment and they failed to apply the update to every SKU. I would report it though so they can fix it.

                      Restrooms aren't public.

If that’s what your idea of allowing transgender people to use the bathroom maybe that is where the problem lies. I’m sure you have never even notice if there is a some whose gender identity differs from their birth sex in the bathroom with you.

In fact the that was my first exposure to trans as a kid, when a fully decked out trans woman came out of the men’s bathroom and I asked my parents why that lady was using the men’s room.

As for pink tax at target in my experience it is very much the case, it equalizes a bit if you use all of their apps, savings, etc and that is the point. The target audience is women, the discounts bait them to the store, the apps track their shopping habits. I’m not a big fan.
