There's still a long wait list to purchase a new Rivian R1T.

I had the opportunity to reserve a first-run Silverado EV early on, for $100. I took a pass as I'm not sure GM won't or hasn't already cracked down on early flippers. I'd take delivery, put a couple hundred miles on it while showing it to everyone I know, and then I'd list it for 30% above MSRP.

Cheapest gas around here is $4.03/gallon today.

Once you buy it it’s yours. Nothing stopping you from reselling it.

It could be the long wait list. Curious how long is the wait? If 1 year then that is a long wait to have money tied up. How much is the deposit? If let's say 50% or $50,000 now and $50,000 upon delivery 1 year later. Then flipping for a $30,000 profit in 2024 but there's no guarantees on making a $30,000 profit with prices & tax credits going up or down.

My father-in-law has been on a waitlist for something from Rivian (not certain the model ... or much of anything about them) for something like 4 years, or shortly after they started accepting pre-orders. I dunno. But personally, I think their vehicles are hideous.... I saw one at a park this winter, not recognizing it, and my only thought was that I'd never be caught dead in it, let alone owning one.

            4 years, that's crazy.

True, but, car manufacturers are aware of the impact of "flipping" on their business and they try to deter it. GM Cracks Down on Flippers Who Raise Car Prices

Not to change the subject too much. But every new, cool EV seems to have a waitlist and a bunch of brokers and flippers who want to profit on the hype. Lucid Air, Rivian R1T and R1S, Tesla Cybertruck (if they ever build it!!), Ford F150 Lightning, etc... In the ICV world, I'm reminded of the Ford Bronco, and Chevrolet Corvette (C8).

That could actually save you decent money in some cases. I'm amazed how many people don't do it. There is a corner near our house with two stations. One is consistently 25 cents or so more than the other, but the more expensive one still gets plenty of customers. It isn't a major road, just one lane in each direction, so it's very easy to pick either one. I have no idea why anyone picks the expensive place.
