  • Half.com Closing

I found an email from Half.com in my spam folder stating the site is closing. Wasn't sure it was true, but did find an announcement on the site that this is true. I rarely use it anymore to sell books, but I do currently have two books listed and will move those to eBay.

    Here is the announcement page.

I must say it wasn't easy to find that announcement in a way that made me believe it wasn't spam. There is nothing at all posted on the site's main page or on my account summary to indicate this. I also didn't receive any notification and I am a very active seller on the site. Very odd.

If it's true, it is really a shame. The site made everything super easy. All I had to do was enter the ISBN and set my price and the site took care of everything else, even the shipping cost. I loved how there was a listing page for each book and I could see what other sellers were charging all in one place. It made it simple to set my price as the lowest available and maximize the chances of selling my copy.

I have sold books on Amazon so I guess that's where I'll migrate to but I think Half.com's system was superior.

I haven't sold books on there in a long time, but it was so useful in selling and buying textbooks. That is sad if it is going away.

Steve, I did find an email from Half.com in my spam folder...and then went looking for confirmation. From what I can tell it is true, but I agree not well done.

FLA, you can buy used textbooks at lots of different sites. Chegg and Amazon are a couple. You can even just rent the books for the semester. Bookscouter, also will search multiple sites for you to find the best price.

I agree with all of this. We've gotten most of DD's books on Half.com and resold most of them there, as well, but we also got some on Amazon.

As for renting books, be careful about that. It isn't always as cheap as it seems up front. If you buy a book, you get to resell it when you are done with it and recoup part of what you spent. Before renting, take a look at what used copies are selling for. Adjust for sales fees and figure out which way is better. We have rented a couple of books but most of the time, I felt buying used and reselling was going to end up cheaper.

It seems like people here are familiar with the site quite well. It's the first time I heard about it, so I guess this could be the reason why it's being shut down? I bet there are other similar sites people use for this purpose.

I'd say Amazon and Half.com are the two big sites for books, CDs, and DVDs. I've been selling on Half.com for years and have always done very well there. It's a very active site. It isn't unusual for my listings to sell within 12 hours of posting them.
