I would go 10-15 times earnings for both of you. So if you earn $100K, go $1.5 million. If you have small children, you're likely ok with 25 year level. After 25 years, you should have plenty of assets and minus the kidlets, so you don't have much to insure against.

I think your mom just doesn't understand at all what she is paying for. You may need to talk to Human Resources to get it straightened out so you know what she is getting. They won’t talk to you without her there. It isn’t something to be embarrassed about. I used to help the other nurses figure out the best policies for them as they just didn’t get it. But for $100/month you guys should be getting a cool million each, not $10K!

When I was still working, I paid some chump change (less than $10) every other week for short term disability and so glad I did as I got paid out $10K non-tax short term disability. Unfortunately, they didn't have a long-term policy as I would be luxuriating receiving that. My life insurance was free through the company and ended with my employment. So that $5+ amount sounds like it could be that.

We pay a bit less than $600/year for a term life of $250K for hubby with only 6 years to go which is what makes me want to get everything paid off now as much as possible because no one would cover him again I’m sure and no one would cover me, at least not at any rate we could afford. A day after he had his physical for the term life, he went into a.fib and landed in the hospital.
