From a practical standpoint, it is absurd to help family members who are in financial need due to their own ineptitude.
But whether or not it's their fault, they are in need. The kids are in need, and we don't want them to suffer.
And we certainly don't want to be viewed as the "rich aunt and uncle who wouldn't help us" at future Christmas dinners.
Better to be a few dollars lighter in the wallet than be perceived as a rich, heartless ogre for the rest of my life.
