I recently started hosting Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" class. Though I don't agree with 100% of what he says, he does teach this class well. I had to buy the leadership kit and then the rest of my time spent is volunteer. I have three couples, three 22 year olds and two older singles in the class. We just completed our 6 out of 9 class and it has been well worth it!

Using something like Dave Ramsey's program is a lot more forgiving. "hey, you wanna come to this class that teaches people how to get out of debt and save money for retirement?" vs "Hey, can I look at your finances and then tell you what you need to do?"

It isn't so much the first time you bring it up that destroys. People can simply say "no", or "I don't want to talk about it", and you move on. it's if you continue to push someone, or push them too much too soon if they do give you a little, that it causes the harm. Even if they don't tell you, they won't want to talk to you because they fear you will bring it up again or ask about it.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

Sounds great! How do you handle it when something comes up in the material that you don't agree with?

There was a time when I thought this was true, but over the years I've learned that it just isn't. There are many, many people out there who simply don't have a clue. They have no idea what constitutes a healthy diet. They don't have the slightest idea where or how to save money or get out of debt. This isn't stuff that you innately know. You need to be taught these things and most people just never got those lessons. They learned how to cook and eat from their obese mothers and fathers. They learned how to handle money from their broke parents and friends. They do what they do because it's all they have ever known.

Perhaps you are confusing bad behavior with lack of information.

Every child knows math, knows how to add and subtract and understand the concept of a negative number. Every child should also know how fat is stored in your body and how calories work(at least until 18..they should understand these things).

Using the information learned from school..one can assume what balancing a check book means...
