I believe apple is among the mix of companies my index funds invest in so I'm already ahead of the curve.

The Apple ecosystem is ingenious! Apple has managed to develop a solution to problems, not merely a set of "products." People who buy into it get great integration with other Apple products, as well as cutting edge features such as the camera.

This comes at a price, literally. To be part of the club and remain in good standing, you need to pay the dues, in the form of expensive hardware and a closed ecosystem that doesn't always play well with others. For some, this is ok and they're willing to participate. For others, once they're in, it can be hard to cut the ties since they have so much invested in the ecosystem. Peer pressure is a factor as well, with a lot of teens clustering around Apple phones because Everyone Else Has One. Also, the concept of switching after years of being in one system can be intimidating, especially for those who are lower on the technology scale (any long time Windows users want to switch to Linux?), so it's just easier to stay with what's familiar and absorb the increased club fees.

        JoeP - thats correct.

And it makes sense to hold Apple stock, not get into the apple ecosystem.

The reality is that people will pay $1,000 for the version of an apple product that provides only a marginal improvement over previous versions. So, buy apple stock, not the latest version of whatever they're selling.
