  • Vacuum cleaner discussion revived

Not sure why the vac thread got closed but I think it's as relevant in this day and age as any.

I have learned through a lot of trial and error that the key to long vacuum cleaner life is to actually talk some to the vacuum cleaner when it is out of the closet. There is believe it or not a little bit of artificial intelligence in these creatures and they get to feeling neglected.

Imagine if you were stuffed in a closet for weeks at a time, only to be jerked out and run all over the house without as much as a "thanks" or "kiss my a**".

    Talk to your vaccy.

I had a three story townhouse so I wanted a lightweight vacuum. I had a new Oreck and one passed down from my grandmother. The weight was great, they vacuumed well but the motors burned out on both (they did not get heavy, unusual use). I had one fixed but it broke again in 6 mos.

Now we have one of the more expensive Sharks, after having a good experience with a cheap little one. It's meant for pets, bagless, head turns whichever way you want it to go. Only bad thing is the accessories aren't stored on board. I think it was $200 and also came with a steam vac we haven't used yet. Oh and it folds flat enough to fit under all the beds, I love that.

If you want a vacuum that will last practically forever, get a sensor s12.

It's a commercial vacuum that we use at our facilities that get run 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Even with all those hours of operation we still get 5-7 years out of each vacuum.

Just looked at the online pricing, I can't believe the markup for the average consumer (almost double my cost)
      Gunga galunga...gunga -- gunga galunga.

We have gone through a vacuum a year for a long time until recently (between my long hair and the dog hair, no vacucum stands a chance). We'd tried so many brands - Dyson, Hoover, Kenmore, bagged, bagless, you name it. They'd all die in a year or start stinking badly or something. Now we have a Miele Brilliance canister, and holy wow, we love that thing. Their bags are the best and the charcoal filters stop any smell at all. I expect it to last at least 15 years if not forever.

The only thing my vacuum needs to know is that the beatings will continue until morale improves.

That reminds me of the time when I first moved to Texas:

I saw a store called "catfish repair".

Use arm&hammer odor eliminator when you vacuum. It's $2 or so a box. Keeps things fresh and a non-stinky vacuum.

I use a Roomba since I'm lazy to actually vacuum myself and my place has hardwood floors. I think it's 8-10 years old, not sure.

Aside from replacing the battery once and the cleaning head module once, haven't had problems with it.

We have a roomba, but one day one of the doggies poo poo'd in the study and poo poo and roombas don't like each other: The roomba ran over the poo poo and proceeded to spread it throughout the room with the brushes. That poor roomba had poo poo in every orfice, and the room had poo poo in every strand of carpet.

It was so bad that a professional carpet cleaner had to take the carpet up and simply replace it - it was beyond cleaning.

So beware of roombas if you have dogs that go poo.

and I thought the worst with a pet is the pet attacking it or fur clogging it.

Oh, believe me, we tried that. Didn't work... it just got gummed up in the vacuum mechanisms with all the dog hair. With the Miele, we have none of those worries. It's awesome.

Amen. We have a Miele Dog & Cat and love it. It was expensive (shopped around for the best deal we could find on one, of course, but still) . . . and it was worth it!

I'd never even heard of this brand. I went looking for reviews on YouTube. I'm impressed!
