  • Priorities?

I watched a coworker of mine on the phone last week trying to pay his car insurance. He had 3 credit cards and a debit card laid out on the table.
No luck in paying, as all 3 cards were maxed, and the debit card had no more money left in the account.

Enter this past weekend where he was talking about going to a Comic Con convention and dropping $300 to get pictures taken with D list celebrities.

I didn't say anything or offer any advice or even comment at all.
This past week wasn't payday, so I assume he had the money.
He just wanted to use it for fun instead of paying bills?

Seems like a pretty stressful way to live, as he also routinely receives collection calls from various creditors.

I don't get voluntarily putting yourself in that position, but whatever.
All I can say is that I'm glad that I'm not him.
I'm not sure that sort of behavior, or mindset, or priority can be fixed. At least not easily.
It's scary to think how many more people are out there just like him

I have a couple friends just like that. Not a way I want to live. I couldn't imagine the added stress of that. Although, those people are usually not wound as tight. They're just happy go lucky so it's really not that stressful for them. I sometimes wish I could have that mindset.

In my spare time I am involved with a group that does paranormal investigation. I am not speaking to the legitimacy of claims of ghost, an afterlife, or anything else. People make claims, we try to gather some video, or audio evidence of their claims. There is weird stuff, but you're never going to be able to prove there are ghost. We Do Not Charge. Ninety percent of the time, we come up with a reasonable explanation for the claims.

The reason for bringing this detail up is because it does afford me the opportunity to meet all sorts of people.

We spent Saturday evening with a woman (37) and her boyfriend (38) in their apartment. Her claim was a demon lived in her bed room, forcing them to sleep on the couch.

She does have a list of mental issues, and he appeared to have had serious health (drugs or HIV or hepatitis I don't know) issues. He could have been a stand in for a documentary on the Nazi concentration camps, he was a walking skeleton.

The boyfriend had actually been at Walmart when we first arrived. When he got home he was discussing the fact that there was only $280 on their card before shopping, but they have $60 left on it for the rest of the month. He spends the rest of the evening playing XBox, while she hangs out with us.

When they need groceries they are pushing a cart back and forth on a mile walk to Walmart. Cloths piled half way to the ceiling in one corner. He rolls his own cigarettes. She bums half a pack off of my friend while we are there. Walking though the house, there are stacks of PlayStation and XBox games. Half of which are still in the wrapper. Empty liquor bottles in the other corner. The dog does its business freely on the floor. Roaches run across the wall in front of them and their is no reaction.

We left them with the opinion that she would be OK to sleep in her own bed.

I don't get how people could stand to live the way they do. Other than her delusions, they were just as content as they could be.

At least in the case of your co-worker, he has a job and so a constant source of income even if he doesn't manage it at all.
