For instance...my wife and I like to go to goodwills, salvation army, thrift stores, etc etc and find deals. It can be anything from an old coffee mugs (like old school waffle house, dunkin, krispy kreme) or she sometimes finds a new pair of $100 anne taylor dress pants for $8. Can I afford to go on ebay and snatch up old coffee mugs for $6-10 each...of course...but finding them for $1 is much more satisfying. I refuse to pay that much for them. Same with her pants...she can afford to buy those but the feeling you get when you score a pair for $8 is addicting.

I think thats why you see what you do on BF shopping. Steve I know you were/are a big collector of disney products. Imagine what it would be like if those $25 figurines were all going to be at one place during a certain time...and they were going to be sold brand new for $7.50. The kicker is 500 other people want them too. When the doors open you're going to B line straight to them and start grabbing...or so I imagine. The money you're going to save is great but the fact that you beat others to these items is a better feeling. I think its just a primal thing most of us have in us. Thats the jist of it imo.

The above example with steve is hypothetical. Whether you would do a mad rush isnt the point...the point is a lot of people have that mentality. Just trying to put it in context.
I think that is probably one of multiple reasons why this behavior occurs.

Although it is not of the same magnitude as the Walmart chaos, I see the same type of behavior at the thrift stores. Our favorite thrift store wheels a cart of items out on to the floor several times a day. Shoppers pounce on that cart and snatch things with that MINE mentality.

Actually, over the years there have been some Disney Black Friday special limited edition items. I know fellow collectors who camped out to get them. Me, not a chance. Even though I'm also a dealer and could have made a bundle reselling them - like my friends did - it simply wasn't worth it to me.

Sounds like the goodwill I go to. People actually hang around the back where they wheel the items out. Second that door opens people are already on the move.

That is the same exact scenario. We like finding deals on things as well, but I do not have enough free time to hang out at a thrift store and WAIT for carts to be wheeled out. And even if I did have more free time, that is not how I would want to spent it.

There's a big difference there, though. The stuff coming out at the thrift shop is unique. They don't have a stock room filled with the same item. They have one and one only (generally). If you don't get it first, you're not getting it at all.

At WalMart (and I don't mean to pick on WalMart - it could just as well be Macy's or Gap or Best Buy), it's more about the price, the bargain. They have multiples of the item and the next day or next week they'll have more or you can go online and order one without ever leaving your house. That's not true at the thrift shop.
