Consider this a public service announcement.

I recently saw a question on yahoo questions and answers asking whether jobs cashing money orders at home were legitimate.

    The answer is: NO.

"Jobs cashing money orders from home" are pretty much a scam.

The scam works like this: You get roped into the scam by meeting someone, seeing an advertisement or responding to an email. The scammer will convince you to that they have a legitimate job for you cashing checks or money orders. They offer a fat commission of 10% or 20% for each check cashed. They then send you a check - and ask you to send them the balance, less your commission.

The check will be fake and the scammers will take your money.

Where are the scammers located? Regardless of where they say are located, their are often typically from West Africa, former soviet block countries or Western countries like the US or the UK. In many cases the scammers are working with persons native to the target country or are from the native country themselves.

Scammers will typically use cell phones for communication. Since cell phone services allow for roaming and can spoof numbers, they allow scammers to effectively falsify their location and identity. Similarly, emails are often spoofed or sent through a proxy to camouflage their origin.

The scammers are usually lying except that they want you to send them money. This kind of thing is really about using you to further theft or laundering of money.

Scammers usually target vulnerable populations like single mothers, students, people who are disabled, seniors, the financially desperate, cottage industry owners, work at home business types or people who are ignorant of how the banking industry or accounting works.

In addition, while corresponding with their victims, scammers will typically insert Trojan horses, bots or other malware into the victims computer to access their passwords or other sensitive security information.

Stay away. Its a con job.
