  • Special $300 Cares Act Charitable Deduction

So this may be a dumb question, but I want to be sure. Would my church be a 501(c)(3) public charity and qualify for the Cares Act $300 tax deduction?

IR-2020-264, November 25, 2020 — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded taxpayers of a special new provision that will allow more people to easily deduct up to $300 in donations to qualifying charities this year.

The reason I ask is because this website has a search function and my church didn't come up(no churches did), but I was thinking churches were tax exempt? There are other community charities on the list that I did donate to this year but I didn't get a receipt since I don't itemize, now I wish I would've. My church I can get that. What do you think?

Is your church a 501(c)(3)? We can’t answer that for you. Call and ask if you’re not sure. Being tax-exempt is not synonymous with having 501(c)(3) designation.

our synagogue didn’t have it until 5 or 6 years ago.

Do you know your church's EIN number so you can search that way? One organization I gave to is "d.b.a." so the name I know them by didn't show up in the search, but their EIN number did.
Also, I picked a church I know and did a search and they showed up, so some churches are in the database.
