I agree with sv2007s wife :P and Disneysteve. This tech isn't ready for mainstream, as Tesla has been in the spotlight with the recent wrecks telling us. They are making massive strides, but there are simply too many variables. Tesla's excuse for the man dying by hitting the truck was that it was "too bright outside" and the camera didn't pick it up. Then, the car sped up after shaving off the top of the car and hit fences and light pole by the automated system trying to drive through the obstacle. In other words, it chose wrong and made it even worse. No, we don't need that on the road because for this to work the system needs to be smarter than people, not just a few steps behind.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

Not sure how you got that, but although she's got 2 advanced degrees, she's not in engineering field.

You stated that your wife thinks the technology will be better by 2020.

I also think the tech will be better in a few years but I've got nothing to do with the industry. Not sure what made you assume that.

"She thinks it'll be 2020" and "the tech will be better in a few years" are not the same statements in my opinion. The first has more of an implication of some level of expertise.

But thanks for rejoining the conversation.

Just as an observation, mentioning a specific time frame would indicate some level of involvement since it is an awfully random date to mention otherwise. What makes her think the year 2020 is the year it matures? Maybe it'll be better at the start of a new decade?

I'd think the liability on a driver less car for the manufacture would be a deterrent.

Car gets into an accident and now you can sue the car manufacture as well as the owner (guess which one has deeper pockets)

Not to mention the insurance coverage for the car and said possible lawsuits. Since a driver is still needed, the overhead is going up not being replaced (higher insurance in place of a driver)

I don't know the details, but that's the year she's picked. I do know that she's very current on the news and likely came to the year based on current and future guidances from companies. I know she gets a lot of news feeds (I even wrote a few programs to collect info for her).

I feel more irritated at the idea of taking Uber than having self-driving taxis. We were just in Singapore and they have them there. Pretty cool, actually.

I was thinking she may have read 2020 somewhere in an article. That makes much more sense.

Personally, if something isn't happening within 12 months I would prefer not to hear about it.

Like major construction projects planned for 3 or 4 years down the road.

Or life changing medicine that is years away from getting FDA approval.

I have way too much on my mind going on in real time to wonder about things that may happen years down the road.

That being said, I hope the technology is perfected long before 2020

Uber is offering a free promo for it, so if you are in the area, and open to the idea, please try it and let us know of your experiences.
