  • New minimum wage Salary law?

So I was making 41,600$ a year on salary in IT. I was just told last week my raise was 3%, which was the same for everybody this year. However, when I asked payroll to send me a new check stub today to start figuring next month's budget I noticed it was higher than I was told. I checked my ADP online benefits page and found out I was at 48,000$ rather than just under 43,000$ as I was told it would be. When I questioned them on it, I found out there is a new salary law in effect. If you make under 48,000$ a year, you now have to clock in and out and get paid for OT. If they don't want to have to pay OT and have you clock in and out, they have to pay you at least 48,000$ a year. So, to keep all of us in the IT department on the same page, those under 48k$ just went straight to that. It was a 15% increase for me. The only downside to how my company did this is now the guy that has less than 2 years on the job and still in college is making the same as me, and I have 4 years. And the guy above me that has one year more than me is also making that now. Socialism equal pay....blah!!!

I'm in GA, but I was told by HR it is a Federal law Obama signed in. Took effect this year.

I guess this took effect? This must have been an executive order?

This must be why the law firm that my wife works for recently implemented stricter time clock rules.

If they don't want to have to pay OT and have you clock in and out, they have to pay you at least 48,000$ a year. Blame not Obama, but the company that refuses to implement a time card system.

According to this article, the law goes into affect on 01-Dec-2016, not 30-June.

Corporate hasn't sent out any information on this as of yet, but I do know it is something they are working on. It is highly unlikely this will result in anyone getting a salary increase where I work. Instead they will reclassify positions that are affected.

When did conservatives forget how labor regulations are created?

business will shuffle around salaries and hours, the dollars spend on labor will remain the same.

Maybe you should send President Obama, a Thank You card.

I suppose my company decided to implement it now during our review time instead of waiting until next year. We get raises every June.

We are also in the process of being bought out by a bigger company, which finishes in August. There is a lot of fear of job loss right now among people. We won't know for sure what will happen until near the end of July. August 1 is closing on the buyout.

I can see this hurting some businesses, however, the need is here due to many simply taking advantage of people, like for instance my dad. He runs a building supply company in a small chain, and his is the most successful store when comparing total revenue vs expenses. The store has plenty of available profit to pay him better, but after 30 years in the company, and the only manager that hasn't left at some point but been consistent, he only makes around 40k a year. I used to work for this company myself, and I can tell you they pay you as little as you are willing to work, and won't give a raise if they don't have to. They are happy to just replace you with a lower paying person. I went 4 years driving an 18 wheeler for them making 10$/hr.

I watched one year as my dad had an exceptionally good year, and was making sure all his people got raises. Nothing major, but a little better than cost of living. Mind you most of these people make 9-11/hr. When he was done, he submitted for his own raise and was denied. They said he spent all his money giving others raises. This isn't a big company, but they make plenty. They wouldn't even see a difference with my dad getting 50-100$ a week more. It's a private company, and I have watched them do people wrong so many times. I was happy to leave.

There isn't a lot of job options, and he is not good with change. I believe that is why he has never left. This new law will force them to pay him at least some better. he works 6 days a week and doesn't get paid for OT.

I also want to add I am sick of seeing so many people getting paid low end salaries, and then expected to work 50hr a week standard. I know a lot of fast food places do this. My brother works for Chick Fila, and the only manager who isn't hourly is the store manager. They pay you what you work.

                              only makes $40K/year.

Unless he's full blooded Native American, his ancestors picked up from all they knew and sailed across a really wide ocean (possibly in a very tiny wooden ship) to get here.

If you want more, you need to make an effort, and that quite often means moving out of your comfort zone.
