So I was making 41,600$ a year on salary in IT. I was just told last week my raise was 3%, which was the same for everybody this year. However, when I asked payroll to send me a new check stub today to start figuring next month's budget I noticed it was higher than I was told. I checked my ADP online benefits page and found out I was at 48,000$ rather than just under 43,000$ as I was told it would be. When I questioned them on it, I found out there is a new salary law in effect. If you make under 48,000$ a year, you now have to clock in and out and get paid for OT. If they don't want to have to pay OT and have you clock in and out, they have to pay you at least 48,000$ a year. So, to keep all of us in the IT department on the same page, those under 48k$ just went straight to that. It was a 15% increase for me. The only downside to how my company did this is now the guy that has less than 2 years on the job and still in college is making the same as me, and I have 4 years. And the guy above me that has one year more than me is also making that now. Socialism equal pay....blah!!!

Corporate hasn't sent out any information on this as of yet, but I do know it is something they are working on. It is highly unlikely this will result in anyone getting a salary increase where I work. Instead they will reclassify positions that are affected.

I suppose my company decided to implement it now during our review time instead of waiting until next year. We get raises every June.
We are also in the process of being bought out by a bigger company, which finishes in August. There is a lot of fear of job loss right now among people. We won't know for sure what will happen until near the end of July. August 1 is closing on the buyout.Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

I watched one year as my dad had an exceptionally good year, and was making sure all his people got raises. Nothing major, but a little better than cost of living. Mind you most of these people make 9-11/hr. When he was done, he submitted for his own raise and was denied. They said he spent all his money giving others raises. This isn't a big company, but they make plenty. They wouldn't even see a difference with my dad getting 50-100$ a week more. It's a private company, and I have watched them do people wrong so many times. I was happy to leave.
There isn't a lot of job options, and he is not good with change. I believe that is why he has never left. This new law will force them to pay him at least some better. he works 6 days a week and doesn't get paid for OT.Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

I also want to add I am sick of seeing so many people getting paid low end salaries, and then expected to work 50hr a week standard. I know a lot of fast food places do this. My brother works for Chick Fila, and the only manager who isn't hourly is the store manager. They pay you what you work.Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you're stupid and make bad choices.

Unless he's full blooded Native American, his ancestors picked up from all they knew and sailed across a really wide ocean (possibly in a very tiny wooden ship) to get here.
If you want more, you need to make an effort, and that quite often means moving out of your comfort zone.
