so many out of work mechanics on craigslist right now desparate for work, they will throw it in for 1/2 the labor a shop gets.

Would you really hire some stranger on craigslist to work on your car? If so, you're far more trusting than I am. I want to know I'm going to a reputable shop that will stand behind their work, even if that means paying more for the job.

If a mechanic is out of work, there might be a good reason for that that would make him someone I don't want working on my car.

That's a very good point. I don't hire just anyone on craiglist for my car.

i use them every time i need some work done and am totally comfortable with them, not every one of them is an out of work mechanic some have very nice setups but having these out of work guys out there makes for more competition and even lower pricing to land jobs. ive had water pumps, shocks/struts and brakes done, nothings fallen off yet

you don't have to use a mechanic off Craigslist to score a rebuilt alternator.
