My stylist works out of her basement. I figure that means that she has complete control over her prices and whether or not she's getting adequately compensated for her work, so I usually don't feel the need to tip. If she does a particularly good job or I'm in a generous mood, I might tip anyway, but I don't feel obligated. She recently started trimming my daughter's hair for free, and when she does that, I tip.

As for takeout, I can't imagine tipping. If you bring the food to my house, I'll pay you for having brought it to my house. If I go get it myself, I see no reason to pay extra.

Why does that warrant a tip, though?

The reason we tip servers in restaurants is because they're paid next to nothing - $2 or $3 per hour. That's not the case for the salon owner, though. She sets her own prices. My wife rarely gets her hair cut but when she does, she goes to a relatively inexpensive salon nearby. I think she pays $50 (yes I know Hair Cuttery is cheaper but they really hack up her hair - she's tried). So $50 is not a small amount of money. It's not like the woman is not being well-compensated for her work. Why should she also get a tip?

If you are tipping for "expertise, education, and experience" how much do you tip your family doctor when you go for your annual visit? How about the vet you take your dog to? Or the plumber who comes to repair your toilet?

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I guess that's assuming that the salon owner is the one doing the work. If one of her employees is cutting your hair, then that individual may not be making all that much. I don't know how much an entry level stylist makes, but it can't be anything to write home about.

That being said, to answer the original question, I usually tip my stylist an extra $5. I don't tip for takeout or carryout. I only tip for sit down meals.

I read in a beauty magazine (think it was Vogue) that you don't tip the salon owner or someone working from home. Both times I followed that advice, they stopped returning my calls. I tip 20% or more if I like the cut and stylist because I try to develop a relationship with a stylist I like. I loathe finding a new one. I'm still looking, and it has been over 2 years now.

Tipping on carry-out might be a regional thing. I never heard of it until we were traveling and I saw a space for "carryout tip" on a receipt.

There's usually a space for it when I order takeouts. I always write "0" when I do takeouts. (Not "carryout tip", but just general tips line. I'll do the same for carryout tips unless it's delivery to your car)

Ok, here's another one to ponder....do you tip at Sonic?

Today I worked out of town. Sonic was about the only place to go for lunch where I was. So I had Sonic for lunch today. As soon as I placed my order, I knew waitress would come out with the bag expecting a tip, or at least that's the vibe. I tried to pay with my credit card at the order screen after I placed my order but of course it was busted up. I had only $2 cash on me so waitress had to take my credit card and run it. Didn't really like that. I don't remember if I had to sign for receipt or if she just gave receipt to me; I just wanted to make sure she gave me ketchup for the tots before she walked off. I have tipped at Sonic before, but I did not today. Thoughts?

I tell you something I have been doing that I like is when I get to a red light off interstate and I see a beggar there I have been giving them a bottle of water. I always keep a case of bottled water in my backseat. I take them in here and there to work with me. I gave away three (3) bottles of water this week to various roadside beggars. Two (2) of the beggars were appreciative of the water, while there was one guy who seemed kind of let down, but he took it. Although I had $2 cash on me today most days I carry $0 cash on me, so giving them bottled water especially with summer heating up is good.
