I wonder if some day cares are dealing from both sides of the deck (small businesses taking loans that will be forgiven to pay their employees while they are closed and also charging their clients...).

That would be criminal in my opinion and very possibly actually illegal if you could prove it. Seems like there's fraud in there somewhere.

I don't think any business would be that stupid to take a loan from the Govt while collecting $$$$ from clients / customers. I haven't read the loan eligibility requirements yet that could make this a criminal act but it seems morally decrepit.

While force majeure might let both parties out of a contract, one party ia almost always weaker (with less bargaining power) in the equation. Parents would be tbose with less power than providers because quality child care is notoriously difficult to find and you hope to return to work in a few months and don't want to be without reliable care when that happens. So parents may unwillingly opt to pay, just so this doesn't cause problems later when the lockdown lifts and they have to be back at work. This is what some of these providers are banking on. Slimy but not exactly illegal. If you do involve a lawyer, they may back off but since my child could potentially later be in their care, I wouldn't risk it.

I do know of a few individuals who are planning on not paying rent since there is a moratorium on evictions in many states at this time. They are confusing "forbearance" with "forgiveness". When the moratorium lifts they are going to be on the hook for all the back rent + added fees / fines, so good luck with that. Same thing with mortgages or student loans. I'd be taking advantage of the temporary waiver of interest to pay off my student loans now if I could (as I'd be paying off more of the principal) but some people don't want to do that. I am not talking about folks stashing cash as they anticipate being furloughed or laid off, or people building to their emergency funds, I am talking about people who have a stable job + an emergency fund but who still don't wanr to pay on their rent / mortgage / student loans because they THINK they can get away with it right now. Oh boy do they have another thought coming when this all lifts! Ugh. People can just be so utterly, incredibly, deliriously STUPID!

What made me think about this is the airlines.... I'm still waiting for a refund (about 4 weeks now) on a trip where they cancelled their schedule.

My parents had scheduled a long overdue trip to Singapore in May. Singapore Air canceled their tickets and merely offered credit for a later date (the tickets were booked by a relative who now lives in Asia so maybe that was why)? I don't think they will go on the trip anymore so it is a loss for them, even with travel credit.

business and consumer situation is a bit different. Business should perform to get paid, not sell a good/service then quote natural disaster as a reason why not to perform AND refund.
