  • Goals for 2016

(Sorry if there's already such a thread...)
    • Finish paying the kids' tuition.
    • Increase 401(k) contributions by 33% (to a whopping 6%).
    • Increase mortgage payments by 50%.
    • Stagger most of my "funds" cash into 6 staggered 12 month CDs. (January, March, May, etc.
    • Try not to count my financial chickens before they hatch... (If I keep my job, 2017 should be great.)

Quit my office job was one but I did that this year after being on my one job 1 month shy of 8 years and I'm happy that I quit.
Never work in the office again.
Make $10,000 a month online. No where near but it's still my goal.
    Help others succeed.
    Save $10,000.

Goals are wonderful, but I am still learning how to make the most of them. I will share three (3) of my primary goals for this year:

Sobriety - At age 43 I gave up drinking this year! I am approximately 121.399 days in of 100% sobriety as of wring this post or 4 months in. There is a smart phone app called "I'm done drinking" just a $1 buy, I highly recommend. Benefits have been increased health, verified with latest "Blue Cross Healthy You" annual physical. Productivity has been much better, and I have saved an estimated $486 to date as of Dec 31. The compound effect is huge on this over time. Imagine if you had every dollar you ever spent on drinking over the years credited back to your bank account. Wouldn't that be nice. I could go buy me a brand new boat, car, suits, etc. Before you started drinking there was a time you didn't drink. All you are doing is going back to that time, back to the original habit of not drinking. In social situations I drink Sprite with a lime wedge so as far as people know I'm drinking with them, but in my own sober way. If you want to give yourself a raise, this is a way to do it.

Squared Away Project - That's what I call it, and it is still work in process. Decluttering home, getting home office paperless (use scanner and shredder), getting everything I own organized, repaired, given away or discarded, home inventory. It's a laborious marathon organization project, but it's been rewarding. The goal is to have my checklist "squared away" by Dec 31, 2016.

Self Improvement - I am devoting a year to studying Brian Tracy's philosophy on self improvement (reading his books and monitoring his blog). Although there is another book I am reading right now, The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. It's been a good read. I have a couple of Brian Tracy books in cue. Both Tracy and Hardy writing style I give a thumbs up. Flows easy.
I also study the Book of Proverbs. Even if you are not religious, the Proverbs of Solomon you will find are at the roots of self improvement and wisdom itself. There are 31 chapters of Proverbs, one (1) chapter of study for each day of the month then repeat. There are 915 proverbs total, most of them are attributed to Solomon as author. All ancient, 1,000 B.C. but still relevant, this is year 2016 A.D. anno Domini. The term anno Domini is Medieval Latin, which means in the year of the Lord. Proverbs are without question a game changer if you study and apply them in your day. I am improving, but like my squared away project, it's a slow moving growth process that takes persistence.

Health - This is not primary goal, but it looks like I will be running my first half marathon in a couple of weeks. I am going to make it happen.

I make too many goals but here goes:

~find out once and for all how much I will receive monthly in disability

~I suspect it will be 22k and this is a humongous paycut for me, I am going to have to have strategies to stretch every dollar

~my EF is at 16k but I will be owing my divorce attorney soon and I need to see a CPA about a complicated tax issue so that will be dropping. My goal is to have it back up to 20k by Jan 1

~come up with a financial plan for my contributions to the household now that my income has dropped so low. Ie: I pay nothing towards our 13k taxes and that feels horrible.

~try to find a NYS health plan that has my docs when Cobra ends Jan 1. I checked last year and couldn't find one, this will likely be problematic thus the need for the emergency fund.

~meet with Vanguard CFP to find out where I stand long term

            ~will and trust

~after nearly 3 yrs living here, throw a house warming party for my hospice friends. i got sick so fast, I haven't even said goodbye to everyone in person

~plan something for my parents' 70th bdays or wait til their 50th anniversary next May but I don't know if my mom will still be here
